Why I Stopped Doing Social Media Management (and What You Actually Need Instead)

Here’s a little truth that might sting:
If you think hiring a social media manager means they’ll create all your content, know your soul, embody your voice, and magically sell your offers… you’re setting yourself (and them) up for disappointment.

Trust me—I’ve been in there.

Back when I offered social media management, I thought I was doing what small businesses needed: writing captions, designing carousels, replying to DMs. But I quickly realized I was playing triage for a deeper problem—no clear brand voice, no strategy, and a whole lot of “Can you just make it go viral?”

I worked with one business owner who didn’t even want me to use her first name online. No BTS shots. No videos of the product being used. Just cold, editorial content with zero personality.

Spoiler alert: it didn’t convert.

Because here’s the thing: social media in 2025 is not what it was in 2018.
You can’t hide behind your product anymore.

People don’t buy what you sell—they buy who they’re buying it from. They want to see how it’s made, who makes it, and why it matters. They want to feel something.

They want the mess. The mission. The moment you almost gave up and the reason you didn’t.

I believe in stories—and in Instagram Stories.

People are nosy by nature. They’re curious. They want to know everything. So show them. Show yourself using the product. Show the behind-the-scenes chaos. Show the moment your kid interrupted your meeting or the packaging fails you learned from. Show up daily—not just curated, but real.

And yes, you have to be behind the camera.
You have to be the one telling the stories, making the videos, sharing the why—because no one can do it better than you. No VA, no manager, no AI. Just you, your face, your heart, and your message.

Because connection doesn’t come from perfection. It comes from being willing to be seen.

A social media manager can schedule your posts. But they can’t be your voice.

They can’t force you to show your face. They can’t conjure connection from a blank Canva post. And unless you give them your actual brain (and access to your soul), they can’t build trust on your behalf.

What you need first isn’t a manager. It’s a message.

One rooted in clarity, humanity, and a willingness to show up as a real person.

If you’re not ready to be seen—to share your process, your values, your behind-the-scenes chaos—no amount of scheduled posts will save your engagement.

So I quit. Not because I don’t believe in social media—but because I believe in real connection more.

Bottom line: Don’t hire a megaphone if you haven’t written the message yet.

Your audience doesn’t want perfection. They want presence.
